Three Wick Spiced Cranberry Candle – 9 Ounce

Welcoming the Holiday Season to come…this candle is the ultimate celebratory scent. Very definitely cinnamon and spice with a jolt of fresh cranberry. Delicious!

The three wick candle is poured into a heavy glass jar with a fitted lid. It holds nine ounces of natural soy wax but looks even larger because of the jar profile. A beautiful gift idea but you’ll want one for yourself as well.

Winter Has Arrived

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania has been in the freezer this past week. Today, I think we get to be in the 20’s. Snow fell last evening. You know the kind that has diamonds shining in it? How gorgeous. A very light and dry snow. I guess that is probably an oxymoron….dry snow.

All I know is that it motivates my doggy pals to hurry back inside after their necessaries are done.

I’ve been playing in the candle kitchen and the candle office.

Playing with new label designs on new WATERPROOF labels. Yay.

Now, I wouldn’t soak them and expect miracles…but a little splash from the sink isn’t going to leave them all messed up as my original labels were. It was a problem that drove me crazy. Funny how I found out that they didn’t have to be that way. My printer started acting up. I began shopping for a new one. Turns out that Epson ink is supposed to be waterproof. Therefore I decided that my next printer would be an Epson.

Uhhhh…..wait a minute. My current printer is an Epson. So I realized that there had to be more to the story. Turns out that it matters what paper you print on. I researched and discovered the right paper …and a great source for it.

To make things even better….I used to have issues with an occasional curling label. Some just didn’t want to stick. Not with these new guys. Man, they really stick. I’d better hope that I’ve gotten it lined up right because there is no going back. This is a very good thing.

So, all in all, the last month has been great! I’ve been redesigning all of my jar labels to make them uniform and original in photography. No clip art. Every new label features my photography.

I hope you’ll enjoy the fruits of my labors. The new look will be in retail shops and appearing in my Etsy shop very soon. I’ll also be in the process of changing them out here on the web site as quickly as I possibly can.

It is Not All About Candles

This may seem like a crazy statement from “the candle lady”.  But, in reality I am more than a candlemaker.  I am a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, a cousin, a niece and a friend.  I spend my days in activities that involve many people in my life.  I do chores, run errands, spend time with my growing children, write on blogs,  practice music for church and very often I make candles.  But it is not all that I do.

I love it, though.  Don’t ever think otherwise.  I would not have kept at this for so many years if it wasn’t a passion for me.

The other thing I have come to love over the past several years is photography.  Who would have thought that?  It came about because of my blog, Hospitality Lane.  I began to realize that just aiming the camera at whatever subject I wanted to share with my readers did not make a quality image.  So, I got better at seeing the image on the screen and knowing if it would look good on your computer monitor.  Before I knew it in my mind’s eye things would appear with frames around them….I would mentally crop images from the world around me.  I was beginning to see with a photographer’s eye.

Still I was not cropping my actual photos nor was I touching them up.  I guess I really thought that would be cheating.   I mean, why should I have the option of fixing a photo when if I had the opportunity I “should” just take it right the first time.  lol…  What  a nut I am.

I came to see the art involved in a great edit.  We have all seen photos that have been edited too much.  They end up being too bright or not natural colors.  Perhaps they are cropped too tightly and the meaning of the photo is lost.  So, I had to learn more, and continue to learn about producing amazing photos both straight from the camera and/or with a gentle touch with an editor.

I was concerned about having a product to offer during the HOT Summer months when we are not burning as many candles.  So, I contacted a local printer about having him make up some photo note cards from a few of my photos.  He was willing, and although I gulped at the price I decided to go for it.  We are now on our third run of photo note cards.

I have been so pleased with the response.  Nothing makes me smile wider than a repeat customer.  Some have come back for more of my cards.  Woot.  They like my work.  That blesses my heart.  For some reason I feel more vulnerable with my photography than the candles.  Something about sharing how I see the world through the camera lens is more personal.

I hope you’ll enjoy my photo note cards.  There are more to come.  The next round are going to be a bit different.  The 4 by 6 photo will be mounted on the card itself.  I may continue to have a line made by our local printer or I may transition to the new style completely.  That, my friends, will be up to you.  In the next day or so more than 200 of my images will be showing up from the photo lab.  I will begin putting them together and listing them for your approval.

These are some of the designs to come:

And many, many more.

Can’t wait for them to get here so I can make them up.

In the meantime I have candle orders to fill……………………………………………..Yay!

What? No More Citrus Infusion??????

When really good things happen from disappointments I just have to smile and be grateful.  As is always the case I design and make up my fundraiser flyers well in advance of the time when they are needed.  This allows time for printing and then stocking up on the supplies I will need.  You should see our garage during these times.  It gets very full….of jars, tins, mugs and more.  Anyway, I digress.  This past Spring I had the flyer made and was about halfway through the season when I ran out of the Citrus Infusion Fragrance Oil.  This is one that I purchase locally so I had no worries about just running out to my supplier and getting more.  However, my heart sunk when I looked on their web site and couldn’t find the oil listed.  What to do???

I decided to head on over there and do sniff tests on anything they had that might be remotely close.  Nothing was a winner.  I was bummed.  Several customers got a note with their order as I substituted Citrus Sage.  Granted it was citrus but not what I pictured as Citrus Infusion.

Next I checked out my favorite online supplier of fragrance oils and ordered several of their citrus scents.  Then came the “lab work”.  It turns out that Fresh Squeezed Orange and Mango Tangerine blended just so make a fabulous Citrus Infusion.  Now, it isn’t the same scent that I had originally.  It is better!  I love seeing eyes open wide and the smiles appear as people get a whiff.  In side to side comparisons the new Citrus Infusion has won every time!

So, I am no longer sad about the loss of that former oil.  Good things come to those who emerge from their panic and do something about it.

This single candle is available for just $20 plus shipping.

The last bowl in this design.

Any item here or in my Etsy Shop with the Citrus Infusion Scent is now this blend.

The Birth of a Website…..

The day that my friend, Nigel Andreola, contacted me with an idea was the beginning of a very worthwhile and special project.  Nigel suggested that he use Good Neighbors Candle Co. as the basis for his college project that would culminate in a fully functioning web site.  I would make any necessary purchases to make the site functional and Nigel would provide the knowledge and expertise to build it.  This meant spending an incredible number of hours in writing code, finding compatible programs,  putting it all together, teaching me how to use it,  adding plug-ins to meet my specifications for shipping options…. and more.  On a very cold day this past winter we took photos which he then used to make the fabulous front page header, complete with flickering candles.  So cool!  I couldn’t be happier…..

I’ll never forget one of the first times we worked on the project.  We had arranged a teleconference to work on the business plan.  It was a beautifully sunny day.    I had locked myself in my bedroom with my laptop and notebook.  The purpose of this particular workspace was to avoid interruptions in the form of our two little dogs.  They have a tendency to expect my attention at the most inconvenient times.  So, it was quite shocking when it turned out not to be the dogs who interrupted that day.  Instead it was our dozen or so chickens out in their coop.  They started whooping and screeching as I had never heard them do before.  Nigel and I were discussing my business plan when that started and I was about to stand up and take a peek out the window when all of a sudden I felt my bed move.  As if someone were underneath and had grabbed it shaking it once sharply.  I caught my breath before blurting out this question to Nigel. “Why did my bed just shake?”  To which he replied, “Hey! My monitor is moving!”.  Quickly we came to the realization that this must be an earthquake.  As the floor began moving I yelled into the phone that I was hanging up and I hung right up on Nigel.  My heart felt as if it were going to come right out of my chest.   Soon my three children joined me on the back deck and we waited to see what would come next.  Nothing did.  All was fine…but that is one memory that I’ll not soon forget as it relates to this project.

As time went on Nigel would turn in parts of the project and he continued to receive excellent grades.  Finally came the day that he had me come to his office to learn how to use the web site.  I was so impressed.  He did an excellent job!  Apparently his instructors thought so as well since they gave him a stellar grade.  It is with much gratitude and joy that I welcome you to Good Neighbors Candle Co. web site.
